( lately Graham has been trying a little too hard to find his own heartbeat, and the best way he can think of on his own time involves running until he can barely breathe. he never manages to hear his heartbeat, but he keeps trying anyway. surely it's there, right?

by the time he makes it back to his flat, though, he needs a shower, and he's just out of one when Emma texts him. it's faster to answer with a video, because he's pulling on a shirt as they speak. )

A pizza. ( he lifts eyebrows before he disappears in cotton. ) Are congratulations in order?

( he knows what she's doing. maybe he wants to tease an actual invite out of her. he could do worse things. )

What are you doing tomorrow?

( aside from her, obviously. )

not sure.

( he knows he hasn't been overwhelmingly fun the past few weeks, and he's trying to get out of his head, it's just slow going. )

[Yes, she's really doing this.

In all fairness, she isn't expecting it to go well. No one has to tell her that he probably doesn't know how to do this; not when Graham barely knows how to flirt. It's an area that's gone unexplored for them so far, but there's a chance that'll change with a text or two. Either he'll like it, or he won't. If he doesn't, she'll stop - she's still going to see him later tonight.]

Hey, I was just thinking about you.

yeah? I was thinking about you earlier, too.

( about a movie he'd like her to see, since they're going to spend the night together. it's their routine, now, and it's a nice one. he's not used to Emma admitting this sort of thing, but that doesn't mean he doesn't like it. in fact, that means he definitely does like it. it makes him happy to know she thinks about him even when he's not there. )

( he wants to say better. better would probably be a lie. )

[For a while there, texting led to sexting and (eventually) sex. Now it's all don't forget the milk and what time did the dogs go out?, and even though Emma is good with those things, she misses the ones that were a little more meaningful than passing reminders.]

[She ordered the pizzas and the vegetables are mostly for show, but if he needs a reason to get home on time, the promise of dinner on the porch might keep him from working later than he has to. It's a nice night, they should spend it together.]

( he doesn't really need a reason to get home on time. it was definitely true that he was staying at work late more often than not before he had more than just a wolf to come home to (Marshmallow often went with him to work). with Emma there waiting, though, it's a lot harder to stay in the office.

and if he's honest, he's running out of paperwork and only so many cats get stuck in trees after hours. )

but Marshmallow might. hard to believe how big she's starting to get.
